14 Day Alaska Explorer

DAY 1:  ANCHORAGE
Get you first taste of Alaska as you arrive in Anchorage today and meet your John Hall's Alaska representative who will escort you to your luxury accommodations for this evening. If you have time, venture downtown and enjoy the shops and exquisite seafood available at many unique Alaskan venues. You might consider a flightseeing trip over the Chugach Mountain Range for a closer look at pristine glaciers.

DAY 2:  DENALI NATIONAL PARK
Rise and Shine! Join your fellow travelers for an enlightening jaunt into the sights and sounds of ANchorage, Alaska's largest city. Continue in to Wasilla for a fascinating look into the Alaska Iditarod and the Iditarod Headquarters. Then it's up the Parks Highway into Denali National Park. Enjoy the rowdy "Alaska Cabin Nite" dinner show before settling into your cozy cabin at the Grizzly Bear Resort, your home for the next two nights.

DAY 3:  DENALI NATIONAL PARK
Grab your camera and get ready to venture into Denali National Park on a 6-8 hour Tundra Wilderness Tour this morning. While you explore the vast expanse of the great park be on the look out for moose, bears, Dall sheep, caribou and wolves! This evening you will feats on a hearty Alaskan dinner with time to relax on your private verandah overlooking the Nenana River.

DAY 4:  DENALI NATIONAL PARK / FAIRBANKS
This morning is free for you to relax or participate in an optional excursion. Go for a refreshing hike, play 9 holes of golf or raft the mighty Nenana River. Helicopter flightseeing trips toward the peak of Mt. McKinley are also available. The afternoon finds you boarding the luxurious first-class Alaska Railroad "GoldStar" service for a 4-hour ride to Fairbanks. You will have dinner while on board, and upon arrival in Fairbanks, you will transfer to Fairbank's newest hotel, The Alpine Lodge.

DAY 5:  FAIRBANKS
After breakfast, a big day of adventure will begin! You'll take a trip aboard the historic paddle-wheeler, Discovery III. You'll navigate the Chena and Tanana Rivers with and educational stop at an Athabascan Indian Village. Exclusive to John Hall's Alaska is a lunch stop at Trail Breaker Kennels, the home of the late Iditarod champion, Susan Butcher. Tour the grounds and learn more about what goes into preparing for a race like the Alaska Iditarod. After lunch you will stop at the Museum of the North, offering an in depth look at the natural history and culture of Alaska. A hearty buffet at the Alaska Salmon Bake followed by a show at the Palace Theater will provide the perfect ending to a very busy day!

DAY 6:  VALDEZ
Embark on a journey today across Alaska's first highway, the Richardson highway and see what less that 5% of visitors to Alaska will have the privilege to see. This afternoon we'll stop at the headquarters of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, the largest park in the United States and home to 5 of North America's largest peaks. We'll push further into the Real Alaska as we travel through the magnificent Copper River Valley and then over Thompson Pass, with a final descent into Keystone Canyon. Spend the night at your waterfront hotel in Valdez, the "Little Switzerland" of Alaska.

DAY 7:  PRINCE WILLIAM SOUND / COLUMBIA GLACIER & SEWARD

(Sailing at 8pm) After an early breakfast, you will board Stan Stephen's Glacier Spirit for a breathtaking cruise across Prince William Sound, home of Columbia Glacier and some of the most abundant marine life in Alaska. Whales, sea lions, sea otters and eagles are just a few of the species you will experience before re-boarding your motorcoach for transfer to your home for the next seven nights, Holland America's ms Ryndam.

DAY 8:  HUBBARD GLACIER
Today's voyage takes you into Yakutat Bay and along side the Tongass National Forest. Within a few hours you'll reach Disenchantment Bay and the impressive ice wall of Hubbard Glacier. Hubbard is the second most active glacier in Alaska and has a face that extends over 6.5 miles in length. The calving of the glacier is never guaranteed but your opportunities are increased greatly by selecting an itinerary that brings you to Hubbard Glacier.

DAY 9:   SITKA
Said to be the most beautiful town in southeastern Alaska, Sitka embodies culture and history everywhere you look. When exploring the former capital of Russian America be sure to experience the first Russian Orthodox Cathedral in the new world, St. Michael's Cathedral. Spend the morning sport fishing, enjoying the Russian dancers, or the marvels of the Alaska Raptor Center.

DAY 10:  SKAGWAY
Today you will travel up the passage of the Lynn Canal and into the historic city of Skagway. As the gateway city of the Klondike Gold Rush, this boardwalk-lined city offers marvels of swinging door saloons and the character spirits of Klondike Kate and Peahull Annie. The opportunity also waits for you to enjoy a memorable ride aboard the White Pass & Yukon Narrow Gauge Railroad.

DAY 11:  JUNEAU
A full day in Juneau, the capital city, offers many attractions to experience. Try glacier helicopter-flying, glacier-trekking, or a 4-hour wildlife quest where whales, sea lions and marine life are abundant. Don't forget to visit the "Red Dog Saloon" or Alaska's oldest Russain church, St. Nicholas Cathedral.

DAY 12:  KETCHIKAN
As your ship calls at Ketchikan, you have excellent shopping opportunities for souvenirs unique to Southeast Alaska, or choose from many optional shore excursions. You might try your luck at catching an Alaska salmon. You will also want to visit Creek Street Historic District, Alaska's most notorious red-light district from 1902 to 1954. This zig-zagging boardwalk on pilings above Ketchikan Creek supported at least 30 "sporting houses" in its heyday. Today, the old houses are being spruced up and converted into small shops and businesses.

DAY 13:  CRUISING THE INSIDE PASSAGE
Tidal waters permitting, your ship will hug the coastlines of Alaska and stunning British Columbia. The scenery offered by the Inside Passage is far different from that found in other cruise destinations around the globe. Keep an eye open for whales, orcas and dolphins during your day at sea.

DAY 14:  VANCOUVER
As dawn breaks on the harbor, your vessel will sail under the Lions Gate Bridge and dock at Canada Place Pier. This marks a time for good-byes and well wishes to all of those new friendships that have developed during your dream Alaska vacation. After the disembarkation process is completed you'll pass through Canadian customs before being transferred to the Vancouver or Seattle airport to board your flight bound for home.
